Tayla gears up for SA champs

Durban North surfer says she wants to make the finals of the South African Junior Surfing Championships.

FOR the past two years, Durban North surfer Tayla Muller has been knocked out of the quarter finals of the South African Junior Surfing Championships, but this year she is hoping to go all the way. Northglen News recently caught up with the 15-year-old who will be representing Southern KwaZulu-Natal (SKZN) in the competition in Jeffery’s Bay. Tayla qualified for the team after placing first in three trials in the U15 category.

“I feel I’ve improved and gained loads of confidence competing in different competitions. I’ve also been surfing at different spots, the South Coast offers me steeper waves while surfing in Durban gives you a softer, gentler wave. This year I’m hoping to go all the way and make the finals and get my South African colours. My dream is to represent the country at the ISA World Juniors, it’s the pinnacle for any young athlete and a platform to shine,” she said.

Tayla said the support she had gained from her coaches, trainers and parents were invaluable to her success.

“I’ve been working really hard this year with my surf coach, Quintin Jones, and Kyle Maher and trying out new training techniques with my trainer Elrich Grace. They have definitely prepared me physically and mentally for the competition. My parents have also been fantastic in their support. All glory though goes to God,” she added.
