New WhatsApp group to the rescue

North Durban residents rally together to help their furry friends.

TYRON Powell is no slouch when it comes to crime, but a lesser-known fact about the Sunningdale resident is his love for animals. This and the recent rescue of a dog thrown out of a car on the M4 led him to start a WhatsApp group called ‘Durban North Animal Rescue’. Though the group is only a few weeks old, it has already has more than 25 members.

Powell said he started the group after seeing the large number of lost or missing pet posts on the Durban North Neighbours Facebook page. He hopes the group will mobilise residents who can help to do so.

“The response from the number of residents who were concerned for the dog who was thrown out the window and the number of posts on Facebook made me realise that there is a need for a response group who can assist an animal in distress, be it a dog, cat, snake or even a monkey. It’s incredible how many dogs get out of properties but the reality is it can happen to anyone.

“As a local resident, I wanted to help out and I thought there are a number of residents who could also lend their expertise and time and a helping hand. I even have some of the guys from Marshall Security who have also joined,” he explained.

Powell said he hoped the idea would get more residents involved in helping to rescue distressed animals.

“Though the group is still in its infancy, we have had success stories and I think it has potential to help so many pet owners and distressed animals,” he said.

To join the WhatsApp group, inbox Powell on his Facebook account or e-mail your telephone number and name to tyron@marshallsecurity.co. za.
