Don’t panic: It’s not pollution

When beach-goers spotted a bright green substance flowing from the storm water drain at Grannies Pool on uMhlanga Beach, they feared that it might be another case of pollution.

RESIDENTS raised the alarm yesterday when a bright green substance was seen flowing out of the storm water drain at the poplar Grannies’ Pool in uMhlanga.

This comes after local beach-goer, Howard Saul, was shocked and outraged last week when he noticed black sludge seeping out of the very same pipe off McCausland Crescent, polluting the pristine beach.

“This is not the first time I have seen waste coming from this particular storm drain,” he said. Following the incident ,Saul expressed concern for the marine life that can be found among the rock pools.

However, Dewet Geldenhuys, operations manager of the Umhlanga UIP, confirmed that the green substance was not pollution.

“It is a test conducted by council. A testing dye is added to the water to determine what runs to storm water drains and what runs to the sewerage,” he explained.

He added that this enables the council to prevent contamination or pollution.

The pipe is now running clean once again.
