Feeding hope among the youth

"Children should be focused on school. Exams and assignments should be their only daily concern, not hunger. We want to help them focus on their education by ensuring that hunger is no longer a daily worry," said Good Luck Foods chairlady, Janet Talbot.

GLENASHLEY-based non-profit organisation, Good Luck Foods, has been warming hearts and tummies for more than 25 years.

Through the organisation’s feeding scheme, the approximately 45 volunteers manage to cook hundreds of deliciously nourishing pots of soup as well as pack 100 food parcels for child-headed homes in the greater Durban area.

“It is a truly wonderful initiative. Not only are all of the volunteers helping thousands of children with warm meals, but it has also created this opportunity to build friendships and socialise,” said chairlady, Janet Talbot.

According to Talbot, the NPO caters to more than 1 000 children in the Durban and surrounding areas free of charge. “Shops and bakeries donate the previous day’s perishable goods to us.

“Our loyal volunteers peel and chop the vegetables each day and hundreds of litres of nourishing, thick vegetable and soya soup is cooked in our kitchen. This is delivered to each school with bread in time for the 10am morning break. For many of the children, this is their only proper meal of the day,” she explained.

The primary aim of the organisation, said Talbot, is to eliminate hunger as daily concern for children in the area.

“Children should be focused on school. Exams and assignments should be their only daily concern, not hunger. We want to help them focus on their education by ensuring that hunger is no longer a daily worry,” she said.

While Good Luck Foods has had excellent support from donors and sponsors in the area, they welcome any volunteers or skilled individuals who would like to assist. Additional donors and sponsors are also welcome. Contact Janet on 082 524 3744 or jtalbot@halomail.co.za.
