Drunken cop arrested in uMhlanga

An off-duty cop is in court this morning after he allegedly hit a pedestrian in uMhlanga late yesterday afternoon.

AN off-duty cop was arrested yesterday afternoon for drunken driving after he allegedly knocked down a pedestrian who was walking on Herwood Drive in uMhlanga. The pedestrian, according to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, is in a critical condition in hospital.

The policeman is due to appear in court this morning.

Deokaran said the cop was not stationed at Durban North police station and confirmed that he was a constable. “We can confirm that he was arrested for drunken driving and we are not sure at this point if a reckless and negligent charge will be added,” Lt Deokaran said this morning.

“It does not matter if you are a policeman or not, you must face the might of the law. It is, however, disappointing that he is a policeman,” said Deokaran. The policeman is allegedly stationed at Verulam Police Station.

The arrest comes a week after Durban North police held a roadblock between 9pm and 1am on the M41 heading towards Gateway, in which 12 people were arrested for drunken driving.
