Wanted uMgeni housebreaker nabbed

CPF praises swift actions of local patrol officer who nabs trespasser.

A HOUSEBREAKER believed to be connected to a number of crimes in the uMgeni Park area was nabbed yesterday by an alert patrol officer after a trespassing incident. The response officer from Blue Security was patrolling Buttery Road when he saw two men jumping over a driveway gate of a property.

The company’s operations manager, Brian Jackson, said the incident occurred at about 4.35pm yesterday.

“When the men realised that our officer had spotted them they both attempted to flee the scene but our officer gave chase and managed to arrest one of the men, Our officer handed him over to the Greenwood Park SAPS who attended the scene of the crime.”

According to Jackson, the alleged trespasser is apparently also wanted for other crimes in the area.

Greenwood Park Sector Four Community Police Forum Chairman Brian Daish commended the armed response officer for his swift action and professionalism at the scene of the crime.

“I knew the suspect from a previous incident and another resident in the road also identified him as a house breaker who had been arrested previously on their property,” Daish said.

Jackson said it was important to report crimes of trespassing, theft and vandalism which residents sometimes perceived as “petty crimes” that were not worth pushing for prosecution.

“The problem with turning a blind eye to these crimes, as this case illustrates, is that suspects are sometimes already wanted for other crimes like housebreaking and robberies. Crimes also escalate as criminals become more brazen when they manage to evade arrest or are arrested and then released without being charged with the crime,” he said.
