Cancer survivors to strut their stuff on runway

Glenashley resident and Mrs SA finalist hosts Cuppa for CANSA event.

THE Durban July fashion extravaganza may be long gone but there is another fashion show that is grabbing the attention of local residents. Glenashley resident and Mrs South Africa finalist, Aldytha Da Silva, is hosting a fundraiser for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) on 1 September at the Glenridge International.

The cuppa for CANSA event entitled BeYouToTheFull Cancer Conquering Couture Fashion Showcase, will feature 10 cancer survivors who will take to the runway.

“This journey has chosen me and as a professional make-up artist, over the years I’ve adorned women for their most important days of their lives, and the idea behind this event was to show the outer beauty within a beauty. I will have 10 incredibly brave, bold, beautiful models who will be taking to the ramp in aid of raising breast cancer awareness. My hope is that this will be an inspiration to other cancer survivors.

“This is going to be an incredible evening of beauty, fashion and brave hearts. I urge residents to come out and support this worthy cause,” she said.

Northglen News also chatted to two local residents, who will be part of the show and who have both been diagnosed with breast cancer. Mount Edgecombe resident, Ingrid Hatton, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March this year and said her diagnosis has taught her many life lessons already.

“I learned it is okay to be vulnerable, but also to be brave and courageous. A major part of my life is my faith, which is keeping me strong. This fashion show for me is embracing my hair loss as a result of the cancer.

“Sometimes wearing a wig makes me feel like a fraud and I’m looking forward to the event, especially because it’s going to raise breast cancer awareness,” she said.

Local resident, Mandy Cremer, concurred with Hatton, saying early detection was key.

“I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and then I went into remission. The cancer returned this year and, after chemotherapy, I had a mastectomy. I think events like this highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness. Finding a cure is something every survivor wants, and I’d love to prevent anyone else going through this,” she said.
