Four arrested – firearm, house break-in tools recovered

A high-speed chase in uMhlanga led to the arrest of four suspects found in possession of house break-in tools.

A HIGH-speed chase through the streets of uMhlanga led to the arrest of four men believed to be house break-in suspects. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, ended on Lighthouse Road with the suspects surrendering. A search of the vehicle revealed a 9mm pistol as well as a number of house break-in tools, which included crowbars and hammers.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said the station’s Crime Prevention Unit spotted the vehicle, a white Toyota, near Gateway.

“The vehicle and the occupants looked suspicious and the driver was driving very slowly. Police followed, and only when they neared the bridge over the M41 did the suspects ‘floor it’ through a red robot. A high-speed chase followed, which ended on Lighthouse Road. We found an unlicensed firearm as well as a number of tools in the car,”  he said.

Deokaran added that the men appeared in court on charges of being in possession of an illegal firearm and were remanded into custody pending further investigation.

The incident follows a similar bust where a gang of would-be house robbers were thwarted by a local security company after they planned to break into a Sunningdale home.
