Domestic held up in Durban North

A gang of armed robbers looted the Portland Place property after one of the men forced himself into the premises and gave access to his accomplices.

A DURBAN North domestic worker found herself face to face with an armed robber on Tuesday afternoon.
This follows several similar incidents in the last week.

According to Brian Jackson, operations manager at Blue Security, the woman’s ordeal began around 12pm on Portland Place. She had heard a knock on the door and opened to investigate the source when she was approached by an armed man.

He ordered her to remain quiet and then continued towards the intercom, which he used to open the main gate, allowing his accomplices to enter the property, said Jackson.

The gang then ransacked the property before fleeing the scene with televisions, DVD players, jewellery, a laptop and a camera. Greenwood Park SAPS attended the scene of the crime.

In a seperate incident on Saturday, 18 July a Sunningdale resident was also robbed at gunpoint in her home on Cupids Row. Four armed men ambushed her as she arrived home and forced her into the property. The previous Saturday (11 July) an armed man also mugged a Durban North domestic worker. The suspects made off with the woman’s handbag.

Earlier this month Haden Searles, the chairman of the Durban North/Umhlanga CPF, confirmed a recent spike in break-ins and armed robberies in the Durban North and uMhlanga areas.
