Boy’s foot trapped in escalator at Gateway

Paramedics and rescue officers worked for three hours to free the boy's foot from escalator.

A 6-YEAR-OLD boy was seriously injured after his foot was caught in an escalator at Gateway Theater of Shopping last night. Paramedics and rescue officers worked feverishly for around three hours to free the boy’s foot. It is understood he was on holiday with his family from the UK when the horrific incident occurred.

Details as to how the boy’s foot became trapped are still sketchy.

According to Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesman, the incident occurred at about 9pm last night on the escalators to the main entrance of the shopping centre on Palm Boulevard.

“Paramedics worked for around three hours and had to dismantle part of the escalator to free his leg. The boy’s foot was eventually freed around midnight and he was taken to a local hospital. At this stage I cannot comment on the extent of his injuries,” Botha said.

This is the second incident in Durban this year.
