Community shows support for ‘Lucky’ investigator

After experiencing a nearly fatal freak accident in uMhlanga local investigator, Lucky Mkhize, received a generous cash donation from the Upper uMhlanga community to support him during his healing process.

TEARS of happiness welled up in the eyes of local investigator Lucky Mkhize, who was injured while on duty several weeks ago, as he was handed a surprise community donation last week.

Mkhize was seriously injured over two weeks ago when he was accidentally hit by a car while chasing suspects on the M4 in uMhlanga. He broke the fibia and tibia of his left leg, bruised his ribs and suffered a concussion as well as a gash on his head.

The Enforce investigator was rendered speechless and emotional when Kevin Webster, the operations security manager for the Upper Umhlanga Security Trust, handed him a cheque for more than R9 000 on Friday.

The funds, added Webster, were a show of appreciation from the community following Lucky’s accident. “The community has taken ownership of Lucky and his family and consider them to be part of the community. They understand the sacrifices he makes to protect them and wanted to support him. We raised the money to help him during his healing process,” he said.

For Mkhize, the donation was not only unexpected but also encouraging. “I honestly don’t know what to say. I am incredibly happy and did not expect this at all. The community’s support means the world to me and has inspired me to work even harder when I return,” he said.

While Mkhize has recovered remarkably well since his accident, he still has a lot of physiotherapy and rehabilitation to get through before he will be able to return to work.
