Cape Town’s Badgers take prize purse

Riverside Hockey Club finish third in Greenfields Elite Club Challenge as Western Province takes top honours.

DEFENDING champions, Western Province Cricket Club Badgers, overcame the threat of underdogs, Kearsney Hockey Club, to win the Greenfields Elite Club Challenge final 3-0 on Sunday. The Badgers led 1-0 at half-time at the Riverside Sports Club and scored three superbly-taken goals. Local team, Riverside Hockey Club, finished third in this year’s challenge.

The Badgers deservedly collected the R25 000 winners’ cheque. The impressive Kearsney outfit made the Badgers work hard for the victory, yet the goal-scoring opportunities they created didn’t translate into dividends.

In the play-off for third and fourth places, host club, Riverside Hockey Club, beat Johannesburg’s Wanderers Jockeys 6-3 after leading a comfortable 4-1 at the change-over.

Six Riverside players got on the score-sheet, which was a mark of their cohesion and support play.
The strikes were shared between Terence Kidd, Taine Paton and Karl Oftebro from penalty corners, plus field goals by Calvin Price, Mike Wiggett and Steve Wiggett.

In the play-off for fifth and sixth places, Johannesburg’s Old Edwardians shaded Malik Old Albanians of Pretoria 2-1.
