Madiba Day springs ‘Domino’ effect

Several stations were erected on the day where volunteers could honour the legacy of late Madiba, including a 'Sarmie Stack Station'

MANDELA Day celebrations kicked off early at the Domino Foundation in Durban North, as they invited members of the public to spend their 67 minutes helping out at the children’s home.

Several stations were erected on the day where volunteers could honour the legacy of late Madiba, including a ‘Sarmie Stack Station’. Last year more than 4 000 sandwiches were made, and by 2pm the volunteers had already set a new record with little over 6 000 sandwiches.

Other stations included the hamper station, where residents packed hampers that would feed many child headed families for a week, the ‘Jerseys in July Station’, where they can provide relief to community members during this freezing winter, and the ‘The Blanket of Love Station’, where creative residents were able to make quilt-like blankets for the seven babies at the foundation.

“I am amazed by the excitement and positive attitudes of all the people who showed up to support our initiative today. Today we have been able to use our connection with the community to serve other people and facilities in need. The impact of today’s efforts is not just limited to this little Durban North organisation, but will be spread all over the city. It is truly a blessed day to honour Madiba,” said Micky Wilkens, CEO of the Domino Foundation.

The personalised blankets will be presented to the children at the home. The personalisation was incorporated not only to involve the community, but also to show to the children that they are special and loved, said Shaun Tait, business development manager of the Domino Foundation.

Once they are adopted they will be able to take the blankets with them.
