Pupils triumph in soccer tournament

North Crest Primary School pupils say their triumphs are because of hard work and dedication.

HARD work, determination and respect were just some of the key ingredients that helped pupils from North Crest Primary School triumph in a local football tournament recently. The U10 and U12 teams each triumphed in the finals of the tournament, which were hosted by Clarence Primary School. Coach of the teams, Buhle Madlala, praised his charges.

“Both teams were fantastic and they played attractive, attacking football. Our U12 team, which lost the opening game, went on to win the tournament, beating the host school in the final.

“That was tough, but ultimately the boys held on. We want to lay a strong foundation for the boys and they all have a bright future ahead of them,” enthused Madlala.

Principal of the school, Thami Mkhize, said he would have to come up for a name for his champions.

“We have the Clever Boys and the Buccaneers, and we will find the appropriate one for the boys,” said a beaming Mkhize. “After every game we do life skills training with the boys and we tell them, in the face of their victories or defeats, they need to remain humble and focused.”

Star striker for the U10 team, Amahle Ngcongo, said he hoped to one day represent Bafana Bafana and play like his football hero, Lionel Messi. He scored four goals in the tournament.

“We all understand what we need to do and we play for each other. We’d want to make our school and Durban North proud,” he said.
