Mall says armed robbery cannot be confirmed

CCTV footage inconclusive, says La Lucia Mall management.

LA Lucia Mall has issued a statement regarding what they call ‘the alleged armed robbery at the busy shopping centre yesterday’, during which R50 000 was taken. Police said the robbery took place in the undercover parking of the mall at around 11.20am. It was captured on CCTV cameras. Police have viewed the footage and are in the process of trying to track down the suspects.

The footage shows four men drive into the mall’s car park in a bronze Peugeot shortly after the alleged victim from Hammersdale had driven into the same car park, said La Lucia Mall’s  centre manager, Vanessa Blevins.

“It then shows two men exiting the Peugeot and approaching and talking to the victim on both the passenger and driver sides of his vehicle. It is alleged that the suspects then held the man up and stole a bag containing a large sum of money from the back seat of his car, as well as the victim’s cellphone and car keys, and fled,” Blevins said.

She added that the CCTV footage did not confirm whether or not an armed robbery actually took place or not.

“Mall security and management are doing everything they can to assist the SAPS in investigating the incident further. If anyone witnessed this incident, please contact centre management or the Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, on 031 560 8049,” she said.

No one was injured in the incident.
