Dashing dachshunds in the spotlight

Passionate dachshunds lover, Lakota Schultz, has initiated a project to rescue and rehome surrendered or stray 'doxies'.

“DACHSHUNDS are a misunderstood breed,” said uMhlanga resident, Lakota Schultz, one of four passionate directors who have been involved in the launch of The Dachshund Haven organisation. ”

“When people see dachshunds they expect little lapdogs that lie all day and do nothing, but the truth is that they were bred as hunting dogs and are very active and vocal. People often don’t do the proper research before getting a dog, and then are faced with a dog that does not fit into their lifestyle or environment,” she said.

The 39-year-old added that backyard breeders and puppy mills are a huge problem in South Africa, and dachshunds are a popular breed, therefore they are often called out to rescue pregnant and emaciated dachshunds.

The non-profit organisation was therefore initiated to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome surrendered or stray dachshunds across South Africa. Since its inception three weeks ago, the organisation has already managed to successfully home six lucky dogs. Currently the Durban branch of the organisation has eight dachshunds in their care. The organisation works closely with a group of fosters who rehabilitate the dachshunds for three months before they are placed up for adoption.

“We supply the food and cover any medical expenses of the animal. Most of our funds are donor-dependent, although we do ask an adoption fee, which includes vaccinations, sterilisation, anti flea/tick treatment and de-worming,” she said.

The organisation also networks with other animal rescue groups such Dachshunds in Need SA and Cape Dachshund Rescue, and will network for dachshunds from groups such as the SPCA and Project Dog to help home their rescues too.

“Our dachshunds are at the heart of every decision we make, and therefore we do extensive home checks before a dog is rehomed. We ensure that the potential new owners understand the breed inside and out,” she said.

Schultz and the rest of the passionate volunteers are hoping to find some sponsors and fosters to assist.
