La Lucia resident wrestles, then subdues house breaker

A resident took down an intruder, found with a stolen tablet in his possession, and handed him over to police.

A LA Lucia resident wrestled an alleged house breaker to the ground in the early hours of Thursday morning. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the incident occurred on Burnham Drive at about 2am.

“The resident was alerted to the intruder when he heard his girlfriend’s terrified scream from upstairs. He ran up the stairs and found the suspect in one of the rooms. He confronted the house breaker and a struggle ensued. He managed to wrestle the suspect to the ground and found a Samsung Galaxy tablet, which belonged to his girlfriend, in the thief’s pocket,” he said.

The suspect has been charged with burglary residential and will appear in court on Monday. While Deokaran admired the resident’s efforts, he asked other residents not to fight with criminals.

“Residents should contact the police or their local security company before attempting to take down criminals. In this case, the house breaker wasn’t armed,” Deokaran said.
