Durban North ladies catch the DIY bug

A group of Durban North women have banned together to learn more about DIY tools and skills.

WHOEVER said a woman’s place was in the kitchen was clearly wrong. Just ask a group of women from Durban North, who are actively seeking out DIY skills.

Durban North resident, Kerry Haylett, was therefore inspired to initiate a DIY women’s evening in the area – the Mica Ladies’ DIY Evening.

The first event was a roaring success as 20 women were taught the basics of electronics, including how to safely and correctly re-wire a plug as well as extending an extension cord.

The group of women was also given some tips on everyday power-saving and load shedding tips. Experts also took the opportunity to educate them about the various glues available on the market today.

“It has been an incredible experience. We had such an incredible vibe at the first event,” said Haylett.

Haylett’s daughter, Casey, said while she did not have ‘a single DIY bone in her body’, she enjoyed the event and has been inspired to tackle various projects on her own. “It was definitely interesting. They make it simple and fun. I don’t generally do DIY, but I feel like there are things I now want and can do on my own,” she said.

The next event will be held at the Mica Store on Umhlanga Rocks Drive on 1 July from 7pm. Experts will tackle drills and drilling. Entrance is free.

Andé Lindique, the owner of the store, said it was a privilege to give back to the community. “We hope to improve on the evening to make it even better. Feedback from the women will be used to shape future topics so that the initiative stays community-orientated and interesting,” he said.
