Gear up for annual rabies campaign

Find the dates and times for the stations that will be be hosted in your area.

THE Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be hosting its annual rabies vaccination campaign on 13, 14 and 15 July. Residents are urged to take their cats and dogs to receive their free inoculations.

Over the last several years, only one positive case had been confirmed in the surrounding areas, said animal technician, Caroline Vika.

“The campaign has been very successful. There has only been the isolated case. With regular vaccinations the disease can be prevented,” she said.

Several stations will be hosted in the area at varying times. Staff have asked that residents keep their dogs on leashes during the vaccination process.

Facts about rabies:
– According to the Institute of Communal Diseases, rabies is a preventable viral disease.
– The rabies virus infects the central nervous system and causes disease in the brain.
– There is no cure or effective treatment for the disease once symptoms have developed.
– The virus is transmitted from the infected host to the new victim through scratches and bites, or licks on the lips or eyes.
– If exposed, seek immediate medical attention. A preventative treatment can be administered before symptoms arise.
– Initial symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. Hyperactivity or paralysis could also occur.
– Rabid animals behave abnormally. They may show a lack of fear, aggression, seem disoriented, paralysed or partially paralysed (particularly in the hind quarters), and salivate excessively. Some, however, never show any symptoms.
