Graffiti vandals deface traffic signs

Local community and CPF appeal for help in finding graffiti tagger.

GRAFFITI vandals have now taken to defacing traffic signs and boards in the area. In February this year, Northglen News reported on the vandalism which has increased in Durban North, La Lucia Ridge and uMhlanga, with several taggers targeting electricity boxes, specifically the new white Telkom boxes. The new trend is infuriating residents, who say the vandalism is ‘despicable’.

One tagger in particular, whose name is ‘Flot’, has angered local residents with his constant vandalism. An uMhlanga resident who did not want to be named said the tagger was defacing property at an alarming rate. The tagger has also spray-painted over arrow signs on Virginia Circle.

“After many months of no new graffiti in the Durban North area, there appears to be a new wave of this scourge. Someone in particular is defacing property at an alarming rate. Some of the postings have been placed on property that is becoming a risk to motorists. One traffic sign that warns motorists of a dangerous intersection has been covered by this tag. Graffiti on private or municipal property is a criminal offense and does not belong in Durban North and Umhlanga.

“The CPF is looking for any information that can lead to his arrest. Should any reader know the owner of this tag it would be appreciated if they could SMS the person’s name and address to 082 956 1608 on an anonymous basis,” he said.

His words were echoed by Haden Searles, chairman of the Durban North-Umhlanga Community Police Forum, who called the acts antisocial and irresponsible.

“We’ve had a few accidents this month on Virginia Circle and this could be the reason. What this particular tagger is doing is endangering other motorist. His actions are having a knock on effect which is costing the municipality, which in turn is costing the taxpayer. There are responsible graffiti artists, but there is nothing artistic here. This guy needs to grow up, get a life and get a canvas that isn’t destroying municipal property,” he said.
