Community rallies around Virginia Beach restaurant

'Thanks for the support' says co-owner of the pop-up restaurant following theft.

THE co-owner of the popular pop-up restaurant on Virginia Beach, VB’s, has thanked residents for the support shown after they were ‘cleaned out’ by thieves last week. The restaurant, which has been a hit with local residents since opening earlier this year, was part of a R12 million makeover project for the beach and was ransacked on Tuesday night last week.

Cameron Delaney, co-owner of the restaurant, said thieves had made off with 14 cases of cooldrinks, six large beach umbrellas, more than 100 patties and a cash register with R2 000 inside. A number of other items were also taken in the theft.

“They even took our cooking utensils, weirdly. I was pretty numb to the face when I got to work the next morning. I noticed the door to our stockroom was open, but there was no forced entry. They took everything. Initially we suspected it may have been vagrants living in the area, but after seeing the sheer quantity of the stuff taken, we suspect that whoever was involved had a vehicle.

“I just want to thank the community for their phenomenal support. I’m just blown away by their response. The day we discovered the theft and posted it on our Facebook page, we had people come down and say ‘How can we help?’ and ‘We want to support you’, which was just awesome,” he said.

Delaney added that the restaurant would be putting up a wooden structure in coming weeks to help shade the eating area after its umbrellas were taken.

“We still can’t figure out how the theft happened. There was no forced entry and we found restaurant keys, but there are only two sets of keys. They never left our possession, which is the strangest thing,” he said.
