Decomposed victim murdered over cellphone

It is believed that the victim was killed after he or she stole a cellphone, said police.

THE remains of a decomposing body were reportedly discovered in a drainage hole in Greenwood Park on Thursday night. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder, confirmed Greenwood Park Station Commander, Col Mbongeni Mngadi.

However, two other suspects are outstanding. The arrest comes after SAPS detectives received information from informants within the Kenville Informal Settlement, he added. “It is alleged that the victim was murdered after stealing a cellphone,” said Mngadi.

The body was found in a 20-metre drainage hole near the Kenville Railway Station. The arrested suspect led the detectives to the site where the body was dumped.

There, with the assistance of the Durban Search and Rescue team, they uncovered the skeletal remains. The hands of the victim were reportedly bound before the body was thrown into the hole.

According to police spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, the body was dumped between September and November last year. “DNA tests will be conducted to determine the identity, cause of death as well as possible date of death,” he added.

The suspect has been charged with murder and is expected to appear in court soon.
