SANBS bloodstocks run low

Ironically, during the World Blood Donor Month the SANBS faces a blood shortage.

THE South African National Blood Service (SANBS) announced on Thursday that they were running dangerously low of bloodstocks, and were urging the community to donate.

Ironically, the shortage comes during the World Blood Donor Month. In celebrating of the campaign the uMhlanga Netcare Hospital hosted a blood drive to encourage donations.

The low stocks were attributed to the winter flu that has been doing the rounds across the country. People are not allowed to donate while they are battling the virus and have to wait seven days after recovery to donate, said SANBS sister Phili Ngcobo, at the drive on Thursday.

Schools are also writing exams, which makes it difficult for them to host blood drives, she added.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, supported the blood drive with his 78th donation and encouraged the public to support the next SANBS drive to be held at Gateway Shopping Centre on 15 June from 8.30am to 5pm. Four other selfless individuals donated during Thursday’s drive.

“It is one of the most selfless things that a person can do. I personally have seen so many tragedies that I understand the need and the importance of donating blood. People’s lives depend on these donations,” he said.
