Billy aims for top CrossFit spot

uMhlanga CrossFit athlete gears up for Granite Games in the USA.

‘TO be the best, you have the beat the best.’ This is a phrase popularised by WWE wrestler and Hall of Famer, ‘The Nature Boy’, Ric Flair. While this phrase speaks to the showmanship of wrestling, it also aptly sums up the sport of CrossFit. That is the pinnacle of success for any athlete in the sport: becoming the best.

One man on his way to the title is uMhlanga’s Billy Pullen. The former SA canoeist recently returned from the Last Man Standing competition, where he finished first (as part of a four-man team for Team Cipla).

He also finished third at the Pretoria Throwdown with teammate, Roman Chausse, and finished in second place in the Fittist in Cape Town competition.

“I’m super stoked – it’s nice having three podium finishes. But going into any competition you want to come out on top, I’m always striving for that top position, but any spot on the podium is very rewarding,” he said.

Pullen is now gearing up for the Granite Games which wil be held later this year in the USA.

“Preparation has been good but not ideal, as there is no right way to train for CrossFit. The key to success is mostly just hard work. The sport is about training for the unknown and unknowable and becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable. I feel I have no weaknesses at the moment and my aim is to be number one,” he said.

Pullen is part of CrossFit Shumba, a new box which has opened its doors just behind Gateway on Meridian Drive.
