Locals hijacked by phony cops

Two unsuspecting motorists were hijacked at gun point by a three-man-gang posing as policemen.

POLICE have warned the public to remain wary and vigilant of a three-man-gang posing as policemen in a Toyota Avanza. This after they kidnapped and hijacked two people from the Greenwood Park area over the weekend.

The men are considered to be armed an dangerous, said SAPS provincial spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane.

According to the unsuspecting victims their traumatic experience began on Sunday, 17 May at around 9am, when they were instructed to pull over on Ramchand Road by the men driving the Toyota, which brandished police-issued blue lights.

After their VW Golf was brought to a halt the gang threatened the victims with a firearm. Zwane said the robbers forced the victims into the Toyota Avanza that they were using as a ‘police car.’ One of the suspects took over the VW Golf and followed his accomplices.

“Then they dropped the victims off at the corner of Nandi Drive and Dumisani Makhaye Drive and drove away with the victim’s vehicle after robbing them of their cell phones as well”, said Zwane.

Zwane said although the men were driving a car with that had police issued blue lights, they were not wearing police uniforms.

The vehicle has also been spotted in the KwaMashu and Newlands East communities.

“We would like to encourage community members to be careful of this vehicle and occupants and to report same to the police if seen in the area. These suspects are armed and dangerous and members of the community should be cautious at all times,” added Zwane.

He confirmed that the case was being investigated by SAPS Greenwood Park detectives and no arrest has been made as yet.
