Hidden Umhlanga market gem

The Umhlanga Farmers' Market takes place every Wednesday from 9am to midday.

THERE is no doubt that the construction boom in uMhlanga is alive and well. Everywhere you look, sugarcane fields, are making way for high-rise commercial and residential buildings. With all the wealth there are plenty of hidden gems, certainly from a property dealer’s perspective. Northglen News found a gem of our own on Wednesday last week.

The Umhlanga Farmers’ Market, which has been in existence for more than 10 years, lies nestled between a number of developments to the east and west. However, it is a veritable treat of locally-made produce, and at reasonable prices.

At the market on Autumn Drive, next to the Rolling Hills Country Club, you will find all you need, from fresh honey, to fresh vegetables and home-made Indian treats that alone are worth the excursion.

Anna Terblanche, one of the stall holders who has her very own home-baked goodies on sale, said she had been exhibiting at the market for just over a month.

“Farmers’ markets serve not only as a way for people to purchase locally-grown produce but also as a chance for them to connect with others within the community. Purchasing local goods is an experience that promotes a sense of place, important in making individuals feel tied to their community. But we have to have the community’s support,” she said.

Longtime stall-holder, John Hawkins, said in recent years he’s noticed a drop in the number of customers at the farmers’ market.

“Our produce compares well in quality, price and freshness to the bigger shops. We have had many faithful customers in the past 12 years, but we would love to see more people. A lot of my vegetable produce and organic eggs are all farmed here in KZN.

“We’d love to see the market grow; come rain or shine we will be here. Farmers’ markets are becoming an important part of the food industry, and the environmental benefits that go along with them, such as reduced transportation costs and reduced vehicle emissions, make them even more important,” Hawkins explained.

The market takes place every Wednesday from 9am to midday.
