Malacca shack fire leaves more than 30 homeless

At least 15 shacks burn down at Malacca Road Informal Settlement.

APPROXIMATELY 40 people have been left homeless after a fire swept through parts of the Malacca Road Informal Settlement early on Saturday evening. At least 15 structures in the bottom settlement were destroyed in the blaze which is thought to have started due to an unattended stove.

“The fire department were on the scene quite speedily and were able to bring the fire under control before it spread to other shacks,” said ward councillor Heinz de Boer.

“Thankfully no one was injured in the blaze but so many people have now been left homeless. We are appealing to residents to donate clothes and blankets and if possible, starter kits to rebuild their homes.”
