Growing giant poses danger for Eastview Road traffic

A massive tree in Durban North is posing a danger to pedestrians and motorists, and has also been used by criminal elements in the area.

A MASSIVE Jacaranda tree along Eastview Road in Durban North has become a nuisance to local residents.

According to Paul Khan, of the Clarendon Neighbourhood Watch, the perennial giant has overgrown into the pavement, forcing pedestrians to walk onto the road and oncoming traffic.

The weight of the tree has also caused it to start slanting towards the road, and some of the low hanging branches are forcing motorists to swerve onto the opposite side of the road.

“This is dangerous. We have approached the parks department about the issue and asked them to trim the tree before someone is injured,” said Khan.
What’s more, cable thieves in the area have also taken advantage of the giant, using it to hide their cutting equipment as well as the stolen cables.

The shadows cast by the tree have also created the perfect hiding spot for the criminals themselves.

“At night it is pitch dark and you can’t see a thing underneath the tree. It is also opposite Benbow Lane, which connects Eastview Road with Conyngham Avenue and even Park Road.

Weeds have taken over on the little thoroughfare, making it the perfect escape route,” added Khan.
