Durban North man robbed and assaulted in broad daylight

Yesterday afternoon four armed robbers assaulted a businessman before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash on Newport Avenue.

A DURBAN North resident was left shaken after he was robbed at gunpoint and assaulted on Newport Avenue in Glenashley yesterday afternoon.

The man, believed to be in his late fifties, was accosted in broad daylight by four armed men wearing balaclavas in the parking lot outside of one of the restaurants on the busy residential road.

According to Tyron Powell of Marshall Security, the victim had just left his business and was on his way to the bank to make a deposit. He had merely stopped to see his daughter when the suspects’ vehicle pulled up behind him.

“We assume that the suspects had followed him, and that the men pulled him from his vehicle before snatching the undisclosed amount of money, as well as his firearm and car keys,” he said.

Before fleeing the scene one of the suspects also struck the man on the head with a firearm.

“He was a little shaken after the incident and sustained a small cut on the side of his head,” said Powell.

Lt Raymond Deokaran, of the Durban North SAPS, confirmed that a case of aggravated robbery was opened at the station.
