New concerns raised over eMdloti’s crumbling tower

The demolition was motivated by the community who raised safety concerns for both the lifesavers and members of the public.

DEMOLITION of the lifeguard tower on eMdloti’s South Beach commenced on Tuesday, 7 April, following months of community outcry.

The dilapidated building had not only become an eyesore, but had also raised safety concerns for both the lifesavers and members of the public.

According to local councillor, Geoff Pullen, he had received many complaints from residents who feared that pieces of the crumbling structure would fall onto passers-by or those using the ablution facilities at the site.

“The building had to be condemned due to neglect and lack of maintenance. It is sad, really. The structure was built in the 1960s and had become a well-known landmark,” said Pullen.

What is more, Pullen raised concerns regarding the reconstruction of the lifeguard tower. “Although demolition has begun no funds have been allocated to the reconstruction of the building. There is no sense of urgency, which is worrying,” he said.

It has been estimated that the demolition and removal of rubble thereafter would be completed in three weeks. Approximately R300 000 has been awarded to the project.

In the meantime lifesavers will be manning the beach from a portable cabin erected next to the demolition site, and beach-goers will be forced to travel to the north beach to use ablution or sanitary facilities.

Pullen said this was unacceptable, as the beach not only has the pilot Blue Flag accreditation (which they hope to retain) but is also a top tourist destination.
