Hat-trick Easter trail run title for Claude

The event was hailed a success by organiser, Buzz Bolton, seeing more than 300 trail runners competing.

CLAUDE Eksteen made a hat-trick of wins after the 16km race in this year’s Umhlanga Powerade Easter Festival Trail Run and Walk, in a time of one hour and five minutes.

He was followed by the consistent and equally-talented Trish Bahlman. Eksteen has won every 16km event since 2013. Durban North’s wily road runner, Eric Ngubane, romped home to victory in the 12km race in 51 minutes, with Karen Worlock winning the women’s event.

The event was hailed a success by organiser, Buzz Bolton, seeing more than 300 trail runners competing.

“The Easter Sunday event saw 350 trail runners heading out on three different trails. The 16km route took entrants over the N2 footbridge, around Blackburn Township, through the Umhlanga River and turning below the Sibaya Casino. The 12km course followed a similar trail, but short-circuited some of the 16km route. The 5km runners and walkers were spoilt by passing through the well-maintained Hawaan Dune Forest.

“The event formed part of the popular Umhlanga Festival Trail series. This year a challenge board was given to each finisher. Any runner or walker completing each of the three events that make up the series will be eligible to qualify for a special lucky draw prize. The three qualifying events are this past Easter episode, the winter Festival in July and the summer festival in December,” Bolton explained.
