Man robbed of R8 000 in uMhlanga

Bank customer held up by armed men metres away from ABSA bank in uMhlanga.

A MAN was robbed at gunpoint of R8 000 outside an ABSA bank in uMhlanga on Tuesday last week. It’s believed the man was going to deposit the money when he was confronted by an armed man. Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said this was not the first case of someone being followed to a bank in the greater Durban North/uMhlanga area.

“The man was walking with a plastic bag when a car pulls in front of him. One of the men in the vehicle jumped out and pointed a firearm at the man. He was wearing a balaclava. He grabbed the bag and the car sped off,” he said.

No arrests have been made in the case.

In August last year, three men were arrested after a shoot-out with police on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. The men were also believed to have been staking out a bank.

“We have had cases in the past where criminals use spotters in banks. Or criminals use informants who pass on information about large deposits being made. We have a few cases in the area in the past. Thankfully no one was injured in the latest incident, but I urge residents and bank users to be vigilant at all times,” he said.
