SA hockey team dashes for a cause

DASHING fun was had at Kensington Square recently, when the South African Women’s Indoor Hockey Team took part in a trolley dash for the Kwa Thintwa School for the Deaf.

The sporty individuals raced through the isles at the Kensington SPAR to gather as many much-needed items for the pupils at the school as was humanly possible. “It was so much fun. We had a set plan to grab as much meat, rice and other staple foods for the school as possible, as well as cleaning products, but we ended up grabbing just as many sweets and other treats,” said team captain, Cindy Hack.

According to Hack, the team recently returned from a tournament in Leipzig, Germany, where they finished in ninth place, and to celebrate their achievement they decided to give back to the community. After approaching SPAR with their aspirations the trolley dash project was born.

In addition to the trolley-loads of groceries, the school will also be receiving beds, lockers, and hockey sticks. The team also decided that they would provide the pupils with some hockey lessons to spread the love and passion for the sport.

The Northglen News did not require any translations from the sign language interpreter to report on the pupils appreciation. It was clear from the bright eyes and smiling faces that the pupils were thrilled and thankful for the donation.

When the pupils were approached for comment, a hail of thumbs-ups were flashed towards the camera to indicate their excitement and gratitude. “We are so happy and thankful for the donation,” said Lethiwe Ntaka and her fellow pupils.

Kelly Madsen, one of the team members, said, “It was such an awesome experience. We don’t often get the opportunity to give back to the community.”
