Keagan comes full circle

We talk to Northwood School's new first team rugby captain.

CAPTAINING a team, especially at senior level requires certain leadership qualities. A passionate belief in team spirit and the ability to inspire and motivate and raise team morale are just some of the qualities that make a leader successful. It is these qualities that Northwood School pupil, Keagan Sparks (18) embodies.

The matriculant and deputy head boy was recently named the first team rugby captain, a position he also held as a junior when at Northlands Primary School. The lanky flank recently took time out to talk to Northglen News about his role as captain, and his future goals.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to captain the school’s first team. It’s always been my goal and something I’ve dreamed about. When I started Grade 8 I remember setting myself the target of playing first team rugby so to be in the position I am is an awesome feeling,” he said.

The first team has endured a tough start to the season, losing two of their opening three games, but Sparks remains resolute that his team will find its feet and form.

“We are a young team and I’m proud of the way we have played in the three games so far. We are playing good rugby and I’m confident the wins will come. Our collective hope is to emulate and surpass the success of last year’s first team. I think we need to believe in ourselves, that’s the key,” he said.

Sparks, who played first team rugby last year, had a protracted spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his hip.

“It was pretty tough because I wanted to be playing for the team. I’m hoping to stay injury-free and give my all for the team. As a team we have fantastic support from the school and from the coaching staff. Having Mr (Grant) Bashford as our coach is a huge boost. He is a wealth of knowledge and I’m constantly learning more about the game through his tutelage,” he said.

Sparks next takes his team on tour to King Edward VII School and said he believes the tournament will not only boost their morale but also help them bond and build stronger relationships.
