RTI operation nets hundreds of errant drivers

Durban North road traffic operation comes in the run-up to the long Easter weekend.

MORE than 450 drivers were pulled over and screened in an eMdloti Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) operation on Kenneth Kaunda Road (Northway) on Thursday. The operation, which lasted two hours, targeted errant drivers as well as unroadworthy vehicles.

More than 50 drivers were charged for various traffic offenses. The operation comes a week before the long Easter weekend, and there are more operations planned.

In total, 46 people were found with no number plates, bald tyres and car lights that were not functioning; 11 people had unlicensed vehicles; 10 people were caught without seatbelts; seven people were found without licenses; two people had their vehicles suspended because they were unroadworthy; and two drivers were issued with warrants of arrest for outstanding fines.

RTI spokeswoman, Zinhle Mngomezulu, said the operation proved to be a success.

“In total we screened 474 vehicles. It was a resounding success, and there will be more operations similar to this leading up to the Easter weekend. Motorists have a shared responsibility to other road users to make sure their vehicles are licensed and roadworthy. We did have a few drivers complaining that we should go after criminals instead, but that’s not our mandate. We are here to enforce the rules of the road,” she said.
