‘Lets beautify our parks’, says Durban North cllr

"OUR parks are a valuable resource that we don't want to lose," said Durban North councillor, Shaun Ryley.

“OUR parks are a valuable resource that we don’t want to lose,” said Durban North councillor, Shaun Ryley, during an informal meeting with Brian Daish, the Greenwood Park CPF Sector Four chairman, last week Thursday.

Ryley and Daish are hoping to facilitate a project to revamp and beautify the Durban North parks. The duo hopes to inspire the creation of an entity (or entities) that could organise fundraisers and manage the admin of such a project.

“I am working on a similar programme regarding Whynotte Park at the corner of Umhlanga Rocks Drive and Kenneth Kaunda Road.

Hirsch’s Décor has volunteered to adopt the park and revamp it to meet its full potential. I have agreed to assist where I can as the councillor. We are appealing to any community members who would be able to donate time or funds towards such a project (or projects) within the greater Durban North area to step forward,” he said.

According to Ryley, the project will by no means relieve the municipality of its responsibility to tend to the parks. “It is definitely the responsibility of the Parks Department to ensure that the grass is cut and that the parks are maintained. The aim of this project is just to add additional aesthetic aspects to the parks to make them more welcoming, appealing and enjoyable for the community,” he added.

Daish echoed the councillor’s sentiments, saying that if more people occupied and used the facilities it would discourage vagrants form using them and add to the safety and value of the community.

“The parks in our community have the potential to be world-class facilities, and I think, through the efforts and dedication of the community, this can be achieved. I do not plan to abdicate my responsibility on the residents, and I am keen to work side-by-side with the members and entities who wish to take part in this project,” concluded Ryley.
