‘Brave’ Jordan honoured in Parliament

Former Durban North councillor says Jordan's fight against cancer was an inspiration to many.

FORMER Virginia Preparatory School pupil, Jordan Smith, was honoured in Parliament today after the 13-year-old lost his battle with cancer on Monday. Jordan was diagnosed with chrondoblastic osteosarcoma, also known as bone cancer, and had undergone several courses of treatment. Last year he spent 107 days in hospital in Pretoria, undergoing 19 chemotherapy treatment sessions and seven operations.

Former DA ward councillor, current Shadow Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry and member of Parliament, Dean Macpherson, read out a motion today in Parliament calling on the Minister of Health to take the issue of cancer research seriously by redoubling the efforts to fight the disease.

“Jordan was an amazing young man and was a source of inspiration to many in the community of Durban North. Today I read out a motion without notice, recalling the battle Jordan had with cancer and the impact he made on so many. It is only fitting that such a brave person is recognised by Parliament.

“I want to express my sincere and deepest condolences to Jordan’s parents. I can not even begin to comprehend the sense of bereavement you are going through at this moment. However, your family is in my prayers at this sad time,” Macpherson said.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jordan will be held at Grace Family Church, 400 Umhlanga Rocks Drive on Tuesday, 17 March at 10.30am. The family kindly requests, in lieu of flowers, donations to assist children fighting cancer to go to Cupcakes of Hope – Nedbank LTD, branch code 178 337, account number 102 874 0565.
