Local event is icing on the cake

THE La Lucia Cake Decorators’ Guild will be hosting a fundraiser on 22 and 29 March at the Golden Hours Market from 10am to 2pm. This year the decorators will be giving the local community a taste of their best displays and characters, while incorporating Easter eggs in their designs.

Most people might mistake the art form as purely icing, but that is most definitely a limited description of what is involved. The guild’s aim is to create edible elements to make cakes more visually exciting, but also show the passion and skill it takes to be a cake decorator.

Bharathi Peer, chairlady of the La Lucia Guild, learned the art form from watching her mother in the kitchen.

“My mom worked on wedding cakes, and I was fascinated by the way her hands moved and the intricacy, delicacy and beauty of the cakes she decorated. So I imitated her: I remember practising with plasticine to mould and shape different decorations,” she said.

The guild also holds demonstrations and workshops, and the money raised from the fundraiser will be used for them.

“Each of the decorations that will be on sale in March will start off as Easter eggs. With the characters we all work on,. we Google images and then visualise how they are going to turn out.

“Currently we have around 20 ladies in the guild, and each of them has a special skill and is incredibly talented. You’ll see it in the designs,” she said.

The local resident said the guild also aims at beating last year’s total of R3 000 raised. The guild meets at the La Lucia Library on the first Tuesday of every month at 9am for 9.30am.
