Drunk driver sentenced to 18 months

A motorist was given one of the strictest sentences for drunken driving in Durban.

DURBAN saw one of the strictest drunk driving convictions last week, said Lt Col Zethu Ngobese, Greenwood Park Police stations spokesperson.

The resident was sentenced to 18 months imprison, suspended for five years, as well as 90 hours community service and was forced to pay a R7 000 fine.

According to Ngobese the man was arrested in Blackburn Road on Wednesday, 25 February at approximately 11pm, as Greenwood Park police were patrolling the area.

“They spotted the vehicle swerving across the road. The officers stopped the vehicle where the discovered the intoxicated motorists behind the wheel. He was arrested and taken to the station where a blood test was done to confirm that the man was driving under the influence of alcohol,” she said.

Ngobese added that drunk driving cases are generally given a two month prison sentence and/or a R5 000 fine. “The magistrate is tired of the high accident rate in KwaZulu-Natal and I believe that they will begin to give stricter sentences to offenders,” she said.
