POLICE have been called in to keep a group of protesters at the Johanna Road Informal Settlement in Sea Cow Lake under control. The mayhem started at 6am this morning.
According to Lt Col Zethu Ngobese, Greenwood Park Police station spokesperson, the situation is tense and residents are burning tyres and blocking roads in the area. They are protesting against what they have called ‘the municipality’s empty promises’.
Ngobese said the residents of the settlement were angry that the municipality had failed to keep their promise to provide the community with building material to repair their homes after a fire destroyed more than 90 informal structures in December last year.
At this stage no violence has been reported.
