35 motorists nabbed for speeding on Kensington

More than 30 motorists fined by Metro Police for breaking the speed limit on Adelaide Thambo (Kensington Drive)

METRO Police pulled over and fined 35 drivers for speeding on Adelaide Thambo (Kensington Drive) this morning. The operation which last five hours (from 7am to midday) also saw a number of drivers caught without their drivers licenses. More than five drivers were caught speeding in excess of 90km/h on the 60km/h road. They were fined a maximum of R1 500.

A Metro Police officer, who could not be named, said they had received a number of complaints from residents in Durban North, specifically residents on Kensington, Danville Avenue, Umhlanga Rocks Drive and Rinaldo Road.

“Residents had mentioned taxis specifically as one of the contributing factors to the speeding and we did pull over a number of them in today’s operation. However there were also a high number of local residents pulled over as well. One man who was clocked at 99km/h which is totally ridiculous on a residential road,” he said.

The Metro officer also admonished drivers going in the opposite direction to the speed trap for flashing their lights at oncoming traffic.

“The point of these operations is to fine errant drivers and try and stop people from speeding on residential roads. I urge motorists who see a trap not to warn other motorists by flashing their lights,” he said.

When Northglen News arrived on scene, one of the drivers had been pulled over for going 90km/h in 60km/h zone.
