Cycling duo hopes to get hearts racing

Durban North residents, Jamie Falconer and Terrence Roberts, have recently founded a NGO, Ride for Miles, in the hopes of encouraging more people to take up the cardio inducing sport.

CYCLING is already a popular sport in KwaZulu-Natal. But two passionate Durban North cyclists dream of popularising the sport even further.

Jamie Falconer and Terrence Roberts have recently founded a non-governmental organization (NGO), Ride for Miles, in the hopes of encouraging more people to take up the cardio inducing sport.

“Our aim is to inspire new people to take on cycling as it is such a family orientated sport that promotes a healthy lifestyle as well as outdoor activity,” said Falconer.

Ride for Miles is an awards program designed to encourage cyclists to participate in cycle races and tour rides. Once the individuals have completed a race or tour they are awarded points. The points can then be used or ‘spent’ at various participating organisations.

Cycling is also an expensive sport, explained Falconer, and the points system was also devised to help cyclists upgrade their gear, so that they can become more confident and excited about the sport.

“We also wanted to create a platform that would connect the cycling community with the cycling shops and other like-minded organisations that would facilitate the healthy lifestyle and family values of the organisation,” explained Falconer.

So far more than 300 people have joined the Ride for Miles initiative and the duo is positive that the project will continue to grow.

“We have only received positive feedback thus far and since we are doing this for the love of the sport and the community, we are positive that it will grow in strength,” said Falconer.
