King Shaka earns auspicious award

King Shaka's International Airport has once again retained their spot as South Africa's second best airport.

DURBAN has a new accolade to add to its already impressive resumé as a travel destination. It was recently announced that King Shaka International Airport has earned the title of second best airport in the 2014 ASQ global awards for Best Airport in Africa.

Airport Service Quality (ASQ), run by the Airports Council International (ACI), is the only global survey which measures and benchmarks passengers’ airport satisfaction.

The annual report is based on more than 550 000 passenger interviews.

South Africa’s airports dominate the top five spots, seeing Cape Town International Airport scooping third place while OR Tambo International Airport earned fourth place. Mauritius’s Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport nabbed the top spot.

Colin Naidoo, Communications Manager at King Shaka International Airport, said that it was a proud moment for the airport, which will be turning five in May. “Being the newest airport in the Airports Company South Africa fold, we are extremely excited to be given that accolade,” he said.

Naidoo added that staff and management at the airport are keen to take first place next year and have already begun to implement plans and strategies to improve their service.

“These include elements of variable parking products and increasing the retail mix, thus giving transumers various options and prices when they shop. Certainly the constant issues will also be to take care of the positive elements of cleanliness and friendliness of our staff,” said Naidoo.

In 2013 Durban was also awarded second place, while Cape Town won the first place.

Last year Durbanites also beamed with pride as the city was crowned one of the world’s New7Wonders Cities.
