Powell involved in early morning shootout

Sunningdale robbers open fire on local security man, Tyron Powell.

AN early morning patrol took a dangerous turn when armed robbers opened fire on Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell. The local resident was patrolling on Village Way close to 6am when he spotted a blue VW Polo with four men inside.

He recognised the vehicle as one that had been used in a robbery at the Sunningdale Medical Centre early on Wednesday morning.

“Our Sunningdale street camera captured images of the car leaving the centre the morning before. We then circulated the information to all our patrols. I spotted the vehicle matching the description and saw them turn into the Sunningdale shopping complex.

“As I turned in they were coming out. I reversed immediately and these guys floored it. They drove into Sugar Farm Trail and drove through the streets of Sunningdale.

Powell said while the chase was going on the suspects began throwing house-breaking implements out their windows in the hope of hitting the pursuing car.

“They threw out a crowbar, a hammer and a large screwdriver. Once the chase progressed onto Old North Coast Road I saw a hand pop out the window, brandishing a handgun. I just remember seeing the muzzle flash.

“I retaliated and fired back, hitting the back of the vehicle. However, the suspects managed to lose me in the early-morning traffic on the M25 going towards Avoca Hills,” he said.

The car was eventually abandoned in Avoca, and was found fitted with false number plates. Despite a search by the Metro Dog Unit the suspects had managed to evade capture.

Powell said he didn’t lose his cool when the suspects opened fire on him.

“We deal with this every day. The adrenaline was pumping – I wasn’t scared, I was intent on catching them.” he said.
