Durban tweeps have a ball

Valentine's Day, Friday the 13th and SONA trended on Twitter this week.

AT the end of last week the Durban Twitterspehere was buzzing with several controversial and exciting topics.

From the highly anticipated State of the Nation Address on Thursday to the superstitious concerns of Friday the 13th, South African Twitter users had loads of reasons to be tweeting up a storm. By Sunday Durbanites had still not had enough of the EFF drama that unfolded at the #SONA, as opinions, hilarious memes and news articles were being tweeted and retweeted at an alarming rate.

Even before the address started, deejay Gareth Cliff collided with Home Affairs spokesman, Mayihlome Tshwete, in a ‘twar’, during which Cliff called Tshwete ‘insecure’ and an ‘underachiever’.

Tshwete later shot back and accused Cliff of ‘perpetuating the racism of your fathers’.

The next day many superstitious Twitter users contemplated their potential misfortunes on Friday the 13th. Those who were unlucky in love even wondered which day would end up being worse for them: Black Friday or Valentine’s Day.

Optimism was replenished on the social media platform over the weekend, as Valentine ’s Day wishes and corny photos of V-day presents began inundating timelines.

But the best news was to come on Sunday when the Protea Cricket Team beat Zimbabwe during the third match of the ICC Cricket World Cup.
