Classic rock makes a comeback

A Durban North resident, Stuart Mey, has founded a local rock band with several fellow South African artists from the 80's.

AGE is but a number. That is exactly what six well-known South African musicians set out to prove when they started a classic rock band, The Handsome Devils, in August last year.

Durban North resident, Stuart Mey, who is the brainchild behind the foot-tapping project, said while the members have been out of the professional scene for some time, they still remain young at heart and passionate about their music.

“All us of played with top South African bands back in the day, and we have been friends for many years, so we just decided to start playing for the love of it,” he explained.

Mey, who is also the lead singer of the band, was a member of the 80s local band Larry and the Lounge Lizards.

Fellow musicians Bruce Boom (Four Jacks and a Jill) has been assigned as a guitarist, Ian Wells (Dickie Loader and The Blue Jeans) takes on the piano, Gerald Knott (Larry and the Lounge Lizards and Third Eye) is a second guitarist, Ian Webster (Pink Champagne, Lincoln and Bite) will be beating the drums while Gary Gibb (Pinnacle and Bent Penny) plays the bass.

When asked how they chose the name Mey explained that it was inspired by a 2003 music show called The Handsome Devils, which told the story of an old 1950s rock band that attempted to come together in the 70s.

“It was almost like life imitating art. As the entire current band, except for one member, performed in the show we thought it would be an appropriate choice,” he said.

Classic rock fans can expect to catch the Devils in action every Friday night at the Bud’s on the Bay bar.

“We will be performing 60s and 70s favourites from bands such as the Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Dire Straits,” said an excited Mey.
