uMhlanga pedestrian mugged by armed men

This is the seventh armed mugging in the Durban North and uMhlanga areas since January.

A PEDESTRIAN was robbed of his cell phone by armed men on McCausland Avenue on Monday, 26 January. The incident occurred at about 11am. This is the seventh armed mugging in the Durban North and uMhlanga area this year.

Last year, between January and February, 15 armed robberies were reported to Durban North Police. What’s more, 80 per cent of the victims were female.

According to Durban North SAPS spokesman, Lt Raymond Deokaran, in the Monday incident the man was held up by two men driving a silver VW Polo.

“They rolled down their window and pointed a firearm at the man and demanded his valuables. He then handed over his cell phone and the men sped off,” he said.

““We are concerned about the spike in muggings. We’ve identified hotspots and have set-up several observation points along them. We believe these are opportunistic criminals looking for easy targets,” he said.
