Hijackers open fire on police in uMhlanga

One of the hijackers was wounded in the shootout during the ensuing high speed chase.

DURBAN North SAPS are searching for two hijacking suspects following a high speed chase and shootout in uMhlanga on Thursday morning (15 January). The incident occurred at about 5.20am. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the crime prevention unit was on a routine patrol when they spotted a suspicious charcoal grey Mercedes on Twilight Drive.

“The members on patrol ran the plates of the vehicle to see if it had been stolen. The control room informed them that the plates were false, and as the members sped up to stop the vehicle the hijackers opened fire on them. A shootout and high speed chase ensued, and one of the hijackers was shot and wounded. Luckily the officers escaped unscathed in the attack.

“The hijackers managed to evade capture and took off in the direction of the M25. The vehicle was later found abandoned in KwaMashu, with the passenger seat covered in blood stains. The hijackers though had managed to escape,” he said.

Deokaran later confirmed the vehicle was hijacked in Greenwood Park. No arrests have yet been made.
