The Durban North and Umhlanga Crisis Team is hoping to recruit new victim support officers for 2015.

WITH the start of the new year the Durban North Umhlanga Crisis Team is building up it’s resources.

The group of selfless volunteers are hoping to rally new victim support officers. Individuals who have a passion for helping other, who are committed and have the necessary resources (own vehicle and cell phone) are urged to apply. Empathy and a non – judgmental nature is also required.

A three day training course will be provided for volunteers, which will take place on three consecutive Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.

Topics that will be covered include: police protocol and procedures, etiquette, personal growth, support skills, trauma counselling and how to handle issues such suicide, domestic violence, child abuse, rape and accident scenes.

Once training has been completed the unemployed individuals (such as stay ar home moms) will be asked to work a six hour shift once during the week and one night shift every second week.

Employed individuals will be asked to work one night shift every two weeks, and one weekend every seven weeks. The volunteers will work as a team of two or three and team leaders will be appointed.

Please note that certificates will only be issued to volunteers who have committed to six months of in- service training.
