eThekwini bus strike ends

Bus services commenced as normal on Tuesday, 6 January following a short strike.

DURBAN Transport bus drivers have agreed to return to work, putting an end to the strike action which led to the disruption of bus services in the eThekwini municipal area.

The bus services, operated by private operator Tansnat, were expected to resume full operations from this morning (Tuesday, 6 January).

“On 31 December the majority of bus drivers downed tools and the service was running on a skeleton staff scale. However, owing to incidents of intimidation, including the firing of shots towards a bus in Ntuzuma on Thursday, 1 January, all drivers then decided from Friday, 2 January not to get behind the wheel,” said the municipality’s Thozi Mthethwa.

The operator has assured the municipality that the drivers have all been paid their salaries and annual bonuses. The municipality is engaging with the operator to find a permanent solution to the challenges.
